2009 Data Bank of MFA/PhD Application Responses

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Hello! Welcome to the site. If you plan to regularly check in here for MFA application response times, I hope you'll consider also making a small donation (even $10) to the website in recognition of the effort it takes to compile/spreadsheet all this data (both current and historical). Donations can be made via PayPal at the link below; it's 100% secure and takes less than two minutes to do. As a fellow full-time student (along with everything that status connotes, like massive debt!) I can't tell you how much donations, of any size, are appreciated. Thanks in advance for your consideration, and best of luck with all your applications!].

[UPDATED 11:14 AM ET ON TUESDAY, APRIL 7th, 2009]

Key:

CNF = Creative Non-fiction notification
D = Dramatic writing
E = English (general) notification*
F = Fiction notification

M = Memoir
NF = Non-fiction notification

P = Poetry notification
PL = Playwriting notification
PR = Prose notification
S = Screenwriting

T = Translation
YA = Fiction for Young Adults/Children notification

* Used where poster does not specify "English," "English with creative dissertation" or "creative writing" for a PhD. response. This notification will be changed when clarification is received.

e = E-mail notification.
m = Mail notification.
p = Phone notification.
w = Website notification (from program website).

* = Notification method unknown.

? = Genre or method of notification is unknown.

For each MFA program listed below, I've listed all available application response data from 2006 through 2008, to include (in the order in which it appears in the listing): school; 2006 response dates (genre/method); 2007 response dates (genre/method); 2008 response dates (genre/method). Please note that only the first known acceptances are listed here. Generally speaking, genres for acceptances were not compiled in 2006, so in most cases the only available information for each school is the date of its first acceptance (in any genre), with method of notification.

Where a program is a PhD.-only, fellowship-only, M.A., or low-residency program, that has been noted next to the name of the school (in parentheses).

NB: If, in the past, a school notified for multiple genres on a single day, that is noted as follows (immediately after the method of notification): "P, F, NF" (i.e., this would be for a school which notified in poetry, fiction, and non-fiction all on the same day).

I just wanted to note that we have only now reached the first notification date from last year, which was the earliest reported acceptance documented on this blog. The waiting only REALLY begins now.

Dear Seth,

Could you also add Ole Miss to the list?

In case you didn't see it, someone posted an acceptance today in fiction to UC Riverside deep in the comments on the Kealey blog. :)

Alabama notified me for poetry today (1/22) as well- via phone and email. This is months before I'd hoped to hear from anyone!

Hey Seth, between yours, Tom Kealey's, and Erika Dreifus' blogs, this entire process has been made much easier on all of us. I'm happy to donate.

Why is there no data for Texas-Austin?

~chidelia

Seth Abramson said...

Hi Chidelia,

Thank you so much for donating! To answer your question, there is data for the MFA program, just not for the MA program. So you might have been looking at the MA program; if you look again, the MFA program data for Texas is on the line right above the MA non-data. Best wishes, and best of luck,

Seth

P.S. Originally I hadn't added the Texas M.A., precisely to avoid this kind of confusion, but someone asked me to add it, and I try to be accommodating, so... :-)

What's the source on the Greensboro notification? Private e-mail?

Seth Abramson said...

Hi there Rachel,

Yes. One of the nice things about TSE--I mean, which makes it more than just a repository for information already available elsewhere, and instead (I hope) an actual service--is that because folks know my level of interest in/experience writing about MFAs, I do often get private e-mails from applicants. Particularly during application season--which is wonderful, as I'm always thrilled to hear about folks' successes directly/personally. (Of course, I also probably check more MFA boards, and do so more regularly [the MFA Blog, thegradcafe.com, P&W, yuster.com, &c] than just about anyone--again in the hope of making this, like the TSE rankings, a service not available elsewhere). Best of luck,

Seth

If anything, this shows us that we can't trust the notification dates from last year as an indicator for this year. It looks like all the schools that are starting to notify now did so waaay later in previous years.

Personally, I find it all very unsettling for my delicate psyche.

Caro said...

Could this have something to do with earlier application deadlines? I believe several schools pushed them up this year.

Laura said...

Good point re: earlier application dates -- I don't know whether Notre Dame's dates changed from 2008 to 2009, but I'm pretty sure that they used to be early Feb a couple of years ago (rather than 2 Jan this year). So while the data bank is extremely useful, we certainly should keep in mind that due dates might have changed over the years.
Good luck to all!

Jenna,

I received an email from UBC. They should notify everyone by Jan. 30. Apparently, they don't judge by genre, but by the three-genre requirement. :S

Good luck!!

For folks who applied to the University of Minnesota: If the U of M contacted accepted applicants on January 23, does that mean those who weren't contacted are rejected? Any thoughts?

sara e.g. said...

Ameel-

I believe Minnesota notified those who are eligible for fellowships on the 23rd (which apparently are those with stellar GPAs/GRE scores or those eligible for minority fellowships.)

From what's been said on these boards, I believe regular acceptances have yet to go out.

Or at least that's what I'm telling myself.

TomatoHarvester said...

I heard from Alabama yesterday by phone/email. In for fiction. Good luck everyone!

leslie said...

i've been wondering that about uncg. think no email means time to scratch that one off the list? i think i'd prefer a rejection than clinging to hope.

Kit said...

leslie (and everybody anxiously wondering the same thing): i work in a graduate program office (not for creative writing), and i'd like to share a couple pearls of "insider" info about graduate admissions that will hopefully give everyone some comfort. it ain't over till the fat lady sings! not hearing anything from a school that has begun notifying people means absolutely nothing at this point. why?

1) the phone calls and emails that go out to notify applicants are usually made by faculty members who contact applicants over a span of time. it's not a uniform process. so not getting word on the day, week, or longer that other applicants have begun to hear is not cause to lose hope.

2) schools will notify their top choice candidates first. based on how many of them accept their offer of admission, they may then go to a second round of offers. some schools operate one at a time (one applicant turns them down, they go to the next on the list until they fill their class.) other schools notify in rounds. this means that come mid-April (which i know seems a long, long time off) schools that have under-yielded will contact other applicants that are on a formal or informal wait list to make more offers to fill their class.

3) it ain't over till it's over. really. don't lose heart if you see an acceptance posted for one of your top choice schools and you haven't heard a thing yet. there is nothing cut-and-dry about graduate admissions, so as painful as it may be, remain patient and don't read too much into what anyone else has heard.

good luck to everyone! i myself will try to take my own advice and remain patient. :)

of course! having this much info available to us is both a blessing (thank you seth) and a curse. i'm ensconced in grad admissions professionally as well as personally at the moment, and it's good to put it all in perspective.

one more thing: while it stings of course to know that you aren't the first person that a school accepts, these programs are tasked with admitting far fewer students than are qualified due to funding constraints and other grad school admissions restrictions. so any offer you get at any point in the game (whether in january or april) is a cause for celebration. a school may not have admitted you first, but they will not admit anyone that they don't want to join their program. fingers crossed for us all...

This website is a curse. I wake up, I check it. I get to work, I check it. I'm about to leave for lunch and I check it. I come within two feet of a computer and I check it. Instead of looking at porn, I look at this page. Instead of checking to see if I've gone over on a bill, I check this. Instead of eating, I read through comments. When I wake up in the middle of the night to use the restroom, before doing so, I check this page.

I want to stop, and yet I cannot and don't really want to stop.

I mean, I could stop, if I wanted.

I'm curious about what's going on at Purdue.
On their website it says they have "ongoing admission", which I've always thought meant "if we see someone we like, we will call them up as soon as we put down their application." Meaning youd think there would be some acceptances posted earlier than other schools who don’t have rolling admission. But how is rolling admission even possible if they, like most other programs, have a predetermined limited number of spots? Do they have another definition if “ongoing admission”? What's up with this?

~chidelia

Kit said...

chidelia,

my sense about Purdue is that they review applications on an ongoing basis as they come in, but they hold off on making final decisions and notifying anyone until they've read all their applications. so it's not "rolling" in the sense that some undergrad institutions are. their process is just different from most places that review all applications together at the same time after the deadline.

you'll find more info on the MFA Blog faculty forum; look to Porter Shreve's post: http://creative-writing-mfa-handbook.blogspot.com/2009/01/mfa-faculty-forum-i.html

Nick said...

Also, not to be contentious but I called Illinois today (where the wifey got another offer) and they said they don't send out letters for another 6 weeks. They were all very upset that someone said anything about being accepted. Was that a TSE faux pas? I'm pretty new to this whole thing.

sara e.g. said...

Yikes. Don't they know that we all talk about them?

I wonder if that Illinois letter someone received was a fluke? Or a faux acceptance?

Seth Abramson said...

Hi all,

The Illinois acceptance was reported via private correspondence, so I won't have anything more to say about it. That person can comment here if s/he wants to.

I'll say, though--as a general comment--that programs often admit one or two persons early, often with an eye toward nominating them for some kind of fellowship or special aid dispensation. It's entirely possible that Illinois has, indeed, notified its first applicant--hence the posting here, which denotes the first reported acceptance from every school, whether or not it is followed hard upon by other acceptances--while still not having notified the bulk of its admittees. That's one (of many reasons) I tell people that the only true "rejection" from a program is getting a written letter on university letter-head. Short of that, anything is possible.

An acceptance listed here does not automatically mean a rejection for anyone else. Anyone else.

Best wishes,
Seth

P.S. I would strongly advise applicants against calling programs to see when/if they're sending out/have sent out acceptances. It will infuriate the programs, quite apart from the sort of infuriation the call referenced above apparently caused.

Lindsay said...

Hi Seth,

UBC's deadline to accept is March 2, and I'm wondering when would be a good time to contact the other programs? I know most acceptances/rejections come out mid-March to early April. Should I wait until the end of February to begin phoning? I don't want to infuriate program directors and I also want to have as many choices as possible.

Thank you so much for answering our questions!

My husband got his degree years ago and is the 'trailing spouse.' He is having a rough time with it, though he has agreed to move (amazing). Anybody else in this situation?

Anyway, good to be here with you guys. Wish I had words of wis' that would help us all get back to enjoying life as we WAIT,,,, but I just have whizzing words. Congrats to all of you who've gotten in! If you have anything to tell us about the other side of this process, please do!

I'm not married, but my girlfriend of five years will be moving with me when I start school. Her family and career are in Minnesota, so needless to say, she feels conflicted about all this. Mcshanna & Kurt --

My boyfriend of five years will move with me if I get in. He's a musician, so he will be moving away from his band. He just finished an album, so he's thinking he'll tour this summer. Everything is very uncertain, and we're hoping we can make it work. Good luck to the both of you!

mcshanna said...

Boy, it's so hard, huh? The big collision. My husband is a new adjunct (the teaching lotto has begun)and to keep the gypsy caravan of it all moving, he'll need a job wherever we go (if we get to go somewhere, if I get in somewhere). All this energy spent--I dearly hope I haven't shaken everything up for nothing. Like everyone else, it's not just me waiting.
Here's hoping, everyone.

Jan said...

Mcshanna,
This waiting IS anxiety creating. I am in a similar, yet opposite predicament. My long time boyfriend lives 1400 miles away and half of the schools I have applied to are closer to him. So we are waiting to see if we can move in together until we hear back from the schools.

Good news though Seth, one of the schools I applied to was FAU, so as soon as I hear from them, I will let you know and possibly you can fill in your empty data spots for FAU.

mcshanna said...

Wow. I wish there were a way we could all just know what's happening! Good grief! --For me there is so much talk about my getting in or not... and me and my husband typically push it to the hurt point before saying, "Well, guess we don't know yet, guess there's nothing to figure out, not yet..." inevitably pushing just a little tiny bit more into the yeeowch of neurosis.
So uh, well, guess we don't know yet--!

Seth Abramson said...

Hi all,

Just to cut this off at the pass: the Nonfiction and Translation Programs at the University of Iowa are in no way whatsoever associated with or affiliated with the Iowa Writers' Workshop. They are not in the same building. They do not have the same administration. They do not share courses. They are three separate and distinct MFA programs, as distinct as the MFA program at Wisconsin is from the MFA program at Minnesota. There have been absolutely no acceptances to the Iowa Writers' Workshop thus far this year, in either poetry or fiction, so far as I know. I have now added a clarification in the Data Bank, above, to this effect. I take the time to mention this because the IWW received somewhere between 1,200 and 1,500 applications this year, and far and away the highest percentage of applicants (out of the total pool) applied to Iowa, so I don't want a general panic incited here.

Phew. Sorry for the lecture. Best of luck to everyone!

Be well,
Seth

P.S. I'll be in Chicago at the AWP from tomorrow until Saturday night (at least), so I won't be updating the Data Bank during that period, but folks should feel free to post any acceptances here, and I'll add them sometime after I return (i.e., probably either Sunday or Monday).

Jan said...

I'm waiting to hear from Vanderbilt too. I talked to them last week because there was a problem with my transcripts, they are still reviewing applications. Too soon to be sad!

Amy Charles said...

What Seth said. Not only are they very different programs (studio v. something more training-like and collegial), they look for very different things, and the dynamics, also -- I talked to David Hamilton earlier this year, and I'm not sure it's possible to get further away from, say, Frank's conception of a workshop. I suspect it's not quite Sam Chang's idea, either.

Also, if you don't get in, don't take it as a kick in the gut. I had a full Workshop ride, nice fellowships, etc. Have supported myself & kid as a writer for years, all with various forms of nonfiction. Been rejected once for NF, and would not be surprised to see another rejection. The fashions come and go, that's all.

What I'm hearing from faculty at other schools is that RAships and GAships have been on the chopping block, and TAs are safest, but there's nothing ironclad there. Faculty searches are frozen. Iowa appears to have a hiring freeze (official or not) for admin and support staff, even at the hospital. Faculty everywhere are saying that this is a multiyear issue. So if you're not funded, or not funded adequately, think very hard before accepting in hopes that next year will be better. If it is -- and there's nothing currently pointing in that direction -- it's not likely to be very much better. And looking at the way the comm industry souffle's collapsed (plus what inflated it in the first place) leads me to think that the money is not likely to be there on the other end, either in faculty spots or in publication payments.

I am thinking, too, that the MFA in (type of) writing may turn out to be another fashion victim, like so many other master's degrees, which are generally conceived as cash cows for universities. Frankly, I'd never heard of MFAs for writing 20 years ago. Since then there's been a private-student-loan-fueled explosion of MFA programs, not to mention corporate-debt-fueled publishing ventures, and, well, you see where we are now. The money is already receding and I'm betting that the writing MFA won't look quite so crucial five years, twenty years down the line.

Essentially what I'm saying is that if your school doesn't offer you enough money, really consider just being a writer. Find readers, find teachers, fit your life around writing. Workshops can save you time, but, you know. We managed to accumulate quite a literature without the benefit of university workshops.

To Lindsay, who asked about Penn State - I was accepted there for CNF and told they were accepting 6 people (total, across all genres) out of 150 or so. Their biggest applicant pool ever. Their program director told me they had to make "heartbreaking" decisions because the applicant pool was so good. I got in there but have not heard from other schools where people have already been accepted, which (to me) points to the randomness of this whole process: people at one school can love your writing and at another school be indifferent...

Has anyone heard from the U of Minnesota in CNF?? I live in Minneapolis and have a boyfriend of 3 years who cannot move, so I am dying a little every day about this one...

They want a response in 2 weeks?! Has anyone else gotten an ultimatum like that? I have been accepted at 2 schools but neither has mentioned a timeframe (although I have yet to receive official paperwork from either). If a school gives such an early deadline like that, is it possible to negotiate?

The two week ultimatum is making my bullshit alarm go bezerk.

I'd be tempted to make your decision on your time (of course, keeping in mind the April 15 deadline).

But that's just me--uninformed and risky.

sara e.g. said...

It's my understanding that schools can't make you give them your decision before April 15th.

But that's just my understanding.

And I'm not understanding much these days.

unsaid said...

On that 2 week decision thing, could it be that they want you to do something in regards to a fellowship nomination in that time? Like the fellowship app is due in 2 weeks so they want you to submit something for it in that time, but your decision doesn't have to come until later. I've seen something like this happen. I also think that some schools may vary on the date you have to reply to be certain of a funding offer. Like they may say, we need your answer by April 1 to guarantee funding. I guess that's so they have time to offer the funding to someone else before April 15.
